Frequently Asked Questions
Q: It says that there is "no level of musical aptitude required", but no one in my family plays an instrument! Is it really ok for us to come? Are we going to be the only non-musicians?
A: Jam Camp is a wonderful opportunity for people who have not had many opportunities to be musical, and people who don't feel like they are very musical. Our camps are supportive, encouraging, and focused on having FUN! There are no competitions and all performances are optional. We do a lot of singing, dancing and hand drumming, which are great for people who do not have experience with instruments.
Q: I am serious about playing my instrument, is this camp able to provide me with quality instruction time?
A: Many of our facilitators are full time professional musicians, with extensive musical training. Although instrument instruction is not the main focus of our camps, there are workshops for a few hours every day where participants have the opportunity to learn one on one or in a small group with our facilitators.
Q: What should I bring to the family camps?
A: Food, camping gear, clothing for rain and sun! Beach and swimming supplies, floaties, sunscreen, and sun hats. Mosquito repellent, wasp traps, something to soothe bites and stings. Any instruments you might have kicking around your house! First Aid kit! It is very helpful if you are able to bring your own camping table, as picnic tables are often limited. At Jam Camp on the River, bring water shoes!
Q: At Jam Camps, can we bring RV's, and is there power I can hook up to? What about showers, toilets and water?
A: Depends on the location!
Jam Camp by the Sea: there are campsites in the forest about 400 m from the group site that can accommodate an RV, but there are no hook-ups. There is an extra camping fee for RVs. Please be aware that you would not be camping with the main group, and the RV sites are dark and right on the road. This campground has pit toilets and no showers. Water is from a central tap, so please bring a bucket to haul water to your camping area.
Jam Camp North: There are limited RV sites, and some sites have power. There are cabins available with bunk beds with foams and electrical outlets: cabins sleep six people. RV sites and cabins will be assigned to the first people to register and request them. There are flush toilets and showers.
Jam Camp on the River: There is limited room for small RV's, tent trailers, and camper vans, but there are no hook-ups and no water. There are no showers at the site, but there are flush toilets and sinks in the hall. Water is from an outside tap, so please bring a bucket to haul water to your camping area.
Q: Can I bring my dog/cat/bird/hamster to Jam Camp?
A: We love animals, but please leave your dog and any other pets at home. Many of our venues have no-pet policies. (Except pet plastic penguins. Pet plastic penguins are always allowed.)
Q: Is alcohol or cannabis allowed at Jam Camp?
A: Many of our venues request that there is absolutely no alcohol or drug consumption by anyone on the site. When we are at a venue that does permit legal age drinking or cannabis use, Jam Camp Society asks that it is kept to being very moderate and very discreet.
Q: Can my child come to Jam Camp on their own?
A: Due to legal limitations of our incorporation, all youth participants must be registered with a parent or another adult (family member, family friend, etc.) Jam Camp staff are not responsible for the feeding, safety, or night-time supervision of participants. Please contact Celina if you have any questions or concerns about this policy.
